For parents and teachers alike, it comes as no surprise that keeping students engaged and motivated can be quite challenging. Here at the School of Popular Music, we do our utmost to carry out our lessons in the best way possible to keep the students alert. For the parents at home who are trying to encourage their little ones to practise, here are some ways to make learning fun even at home:

Turn it into a game
Students of all ages, especially young children, love games, so turning practise time into a series of games will definitely help to make learning fun. Whether it’s through song and dance, purchased games, memory games, online games, or simply adding a sense of competition, doing this will help to engage your child and make the practice session more exciting and enjoyable.

Incorporate art and creativity
Turning music practice time into an arts and crafts session is a great way to get your child’s creative juices flowing and start to love learning and practising as he/she would associate it with something fun, meaningful, and different.

Take it outside
A change of scene goes a long way, so if you have the possibility of practising outdoors, then do so! Whether it’s simply working on a little desk in the garden to do some theory homework or playing some memory games in a nearby park, the change of scene will definitely make it more fun and engaging – especially if the weather outside is nice and sunny.

Review with style
Review time is typically one of the least favourite parts of a lesson or revision session as it can seem boring and unnecessary to children. By turning it into a fun activity instead, your child will definitely enjoy it more and might even be more responsive in remembering everything you’ve revised.

Get involved
Try your best to join your child in his/her educational activity – having parents participating helps to model good revision habits, problem solving skills, team work, support, and the feeling of encouragement and joy in moments of success.

The best thing about these tips is that they will not only make learning fun for music revision, but also for everything else that requires practice and studying. They help to create a healthy bond between your child and his/her studies, as well as between the two of you.
