Being pregnant is a magical and surreal experience, and while it might not always be pleasant or fun, it’s most definitely beautiful. Music can help to not only sooth your nerves during your pregnancy, but it can also help you to connect with your little one. Here are some benefits of playing music for your unborn baby:

Pregnancy goes hand in hand with heightened emotions and can often be stressful too. Just like everything else, stress can have negative impacts on pregnancy that can lead to issues such as sleep deprivation, preterm birth, poorer pregnancy health, and behavioural and developmental problems in your child further down the line.

To help you to unwind and lower your stress levels and provide your child with an ideal and relaxed environment, consider playing some music for your unborn baby. Experts recommend classical music as this genre is associated with enhanced physical development, health, and intelligence in babies – even from the womb. That being said, you can listen to whatever music you truly enjoy so that it can also help you to relax and bond with your baby.

It has been claimed that mothers who play music and read to their unborn babies during pregnancy feel a much stronger maternal bong and also report less symptoms of postpartum depression when compared to mothers who do not use any type of prenatal stimulation.

Interestingly, it has also been established that after their birth, babies recognise the music that they were exposed to while in the womb. This familiar music catches their attention, comforts them, relaxes them, and also helps them to sleep faster and longer than babies who did not hear any music during the pregnancy.

You and your baby can also benefit from singing during the pregnancy, as it helps to build a special bond between you. Your voice gives your baby a pleasant “sound massage” and helps to increase oxygen flow to the baby in the womb, send endorphins to the baby via the placenta, help in your baby’s development of speech, and to simply calm and relax both of you.

So go on and create a special playlist for you and your baby to enjoy during these special months. From lullabies and classical music to your favourite pop hits, it’s entirely up to you!
