Metal music is widely associated with male musicians and frontmen. However, the past decade has seen an increase in all-female or female-fronted bands in the rock/metal scene. Our team at School of Popular Music – offering singing and music lessons in Guernsey – has compiled a list of some of the most talented international female acts. In no particular order:

1. Paramore

No female-fronted band blog would be complete without a mention of Hayley Williams, known for her ever-changing bright-coloured hair, stage presence and her incredible vocal range. Her charisma and great vocals during Paramore’s live performances are a breath of fresh air, leaving everyone out of breath and wondering where she gets her lung capacity from. Her great diction and amazing projection and ability to hit the highest of notes (Have you listened to ‘Misery Business’?), are beyond awe-inspiring!

2. Lacuna Coil

Cristina Scabbia is hands down one of the most talented female vocalists in metal. With her mesmerizing vocals and typically dark and abstract lyrics, paired with the band’s dark soundscape and haunting melodies, Lacuna Coil’s fan-base is international.

3. Guano Apes

Former vocalist of German rock band Guano Apes’ Sandra Nasić. The band’s career took off with the release of ‘Open your eyes’ and is known for great tracks like ‘Big In Japan’, ‘Loards of the boards’ and ‘You can’t stop me’. Guano Apes manage to amalgamate heavy enough music which is yet melodic and really catchy and full of energy.
Sandra’s voice – so much strength, yet can also be feminine in song verses like ‘Rain’ and ‘Pretty in scarlet’, so different, you would hardly believe it was the same singer’s voice.

4. Infected Rain

Nu metal band Infected Rain is fronted by Lena ‘Scissorhands’, with her unique image and voice. Formed in 2008, Infected Rain delivers powerful, energetic music and emotion in a blend of modern metal styles, heavy guitar riffs and Lena’s hard screaming. Lena got her ‘Scissorhands’ nickname from her ten-year background in hairdressing, for which she even has scissors tattooed on her body – in true metal form.

5. Halestorm

Lead vocalist and rhythm guitarist, Lzzy Hale has power and a roughness to her voice that gives it a unique strength. Halestorm came into the spotlight, with ‘I am the fire’ – their intro song for the series Supernatural. She has also performed as a guest with high calibre artists such as Avenged Sevenfold and Corey Taylor – Slipknot and Stone Sour’s vocalist.

6. Jinjer

Tatiana Shmayluk’s beautiful voice, melodic vocals paired with deep thundering screams contributed to the beautifully fierce Ukrainian band being awarded The Best Ukrainian Metal Band of 2016 and getting more international exposure.
