It’s the beginning of a new year – the start of a brand new book. Many have already prepared a list of resolutions that they hope to keep up throughout 2017. Creative people are always looking for ways to improve their skills, so here are some great new year’s resolutions for musicians that can help you reach your goals!
Dedicate more time to practice
This is one of the most popular and useful new year’s resolutions for musicians and artists alike. In order to consistently improve and move forward in your music abilities, it’s important to practice as much as you possibly can – without overdoing it. If you’re really determined to make the most of your time and improve your skills, set yourself a more specific goal rather than a generic one, for example “30 minutes from Tuesday through Saturday”, as opposed to “five times a week”. Eventually, your resolution will become more of a habit, and your skills will certainly get stronger.
Get out of your comfort zone
Everyone has their own style, but trying out new things that you wouldn’t typically go for is a great way of broadening your horizons, and can help you to become more versatile in your abilities. Start by listening to different genres and musicians and experiment to see what you can or can’t do – you’d be surprised at how good you might be at something you’ve never tried. And if not, keep trying and you can get there!
Take better care of your instrument
No matter what instrument you play – even if your instrument is your voice – it requires plenty TLC, so trying to take better care of it is a great resolution to keep up. From setting up a cleaning schedule, to buying new products and cases/protective covers, there are lots of different ways to maintain your instrument. Cleaning your instrument more often is actually easier than letting the debris accumulate and having to work hard to get it looking good as new again. If you’re a singer, avoiding cold drinks, shouting, and wearing a scarf in cold weather are some ways of taking care of your voice. Book in a visit with an ENT to check that your vocal cords are nice and healthy, especially if you get sick often.
