Every different genre of music requires a different style of playing and this is no exception when it comes to playing the drums. A great drummer is one who has knowledge in all drumming styles. Each style needs a different approach and sense of rhythm. Here are the top five essential styles of drumming that we suggest you take interest in.
1. Rock and Punk
These are known as the most energetic genres for drummers since it doesn’t only involve keeping time, but it also involves adding extra character to their performance by playing their drums between beats. Punk is often faster and more aggressive than rock. Some notable rock drummers include Keith Moon of The Who, Dave Grohl of Nirvana, and Ringo Starr of The Beatles.
2. Funk and R&B
Although these styles are the most laid-back, they require the most restraint. In funk and R&B, drummers must keep time and create a relaxed style, known as a groove or a “pocket.” Funk can be quite difficult for drummers that are used to playing rock. Well-known funk and R&B drummers include Buddy Miles from The Jimi Hendrix Experience, Motown session drummer Benny Benjamin, and Al Jackson from Booker T. & The MG’s.
3. Reggae
This style combines the laid-back style of Funk and R&B with a unique timekeeping method. Drummers reverse the emphasis of the beat by playing the bass drum instead of the snare-known as the ‘one-drop’ pattern. Famous reggae drummers include Carlton Barrett from Bob Marley and The Wailers, Topper Headon from The Clash, and Sly Dunbar from the Peter Tosh band.
4. Jazz
Jazz playing is in a league of its own. Drummers play around the beat, including synchronised rhythms played in swing-time. It’s the most complex style of playing and requires the most discipline. Renowned jazz drummers include Gene Krupa, who played with the jazz legend Benny Goodman, as well as bandleader Tiny Bradshaw.
5. Latin
Drummers who play the Latin genre include all the above styles into their performance, relying on complex and energetic rhythms. Latin music relies on percussion instruments such as congas, timbales and cowbells. The most popular Latin drummers include Tito Puente, Mongo Santamaria, and Candido Camero.
